A particular day
The gaze went from the window to the courtyard. But there wasn’t even a fugitive caged bird to capture attention. Much less, on the terrace, you could catch a glimpse of someone with an intention to bring in the clothes hanging in the sun. You could hear only the muffled sound of the helicopter blades. So as time passed, as if to avoid your condition of segregation, you asked yourself if that action in the city was a sign of strength or of weakness. The more that commemoration activity proceeded, the more that ostentation of machines and men appeared obsolete. Conflictingly there emerged a kind of boldness for that passive silent resistance, which united all those people who were left at home.
During the course of that “particular day” in Rome, Saturday 9th of June, you often thought about the Ettore Scola film. It is ungenerous, obviously, to compare the visit of Hitler in 1938 to that of Bush a few days ago. Yet for anyone who was not enthusiastic about the presence of the United States president or did not feel like joining the protest march, did not remain segregated at home. Considering how the city appeared: armoured and guarded by about 10.000 men of the security forces. For a
few hours it was difficult not to share the situation of the two protagonists of the film. Antonietta (Sophia Loren), mother of six children, married to a fascist soldier; and Gabriel (Marcello Mastroianni) a journalist purged because homosexual. The only ones that remained in the building while all the others went to the great event, the arrival of the Nazi dictator.

ma sai che anche io quel giorno ho pensato al film di scola?.....e ti dirò...anche con grande piacere! e per godermi la pace, nn ho acceso neppure la tv!( ...peccato che ero sola.....mastroianni..nn c'era!)

Quel giorno saresti stata meglio, ovviamente, con Mastroianni. Ma anch'io con la Loren. Penso che "Una giornata particolare" sia il miglior film di Scola. Perché quello più asciutto in cui i toni da commedia sono più controllati. Ed è il migliore anche per la sua grande attualità. Il segreto è forse tutto in quell'incontro intimo tra due persone che per ragioni diverse sono ai margini. E fa ancora più effetto pensare al fatto che il film sia stato girato in tempi in cui l'ideologia era la lente dalla quale osservare ogni cosa.
Spesso mi domando perché non c'è un regista italiano capace di raccontare questi anni con la stessa intensità senza ricorrere a stereotipi.
Per quanto riguarda la presentazione del mio libro, si farà il 27 giugno (mercoledi) alle ore 18 presso la libreria Odradek, via dei Banchi Vecchi, 57.
